Talk Abstract
HPC is very important to deal with intelligent computing, and in this report, we try to use HPC technology to implement intelligent medical applications. Specifically, we present a novel depression disorder classification algorithm named Weighted Discriminative Dictionary Learning (WDDL), based on functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data. The underlying relationship between samples and dictionary atoms is exploited by introducing an adaptive weighting scheme. Tested on fMRI data of 29 patients with depression and 29 healthy controls, our algorithm outperforms all other classification methods compared in this work. Furthermore, we detect the discriminative brain regions of patients, which can reveal the pathogenesis of depression disorder.

Neal N. Xiong is current a Professor at School of Computer Science, Colorado Technical University, Colorado Spring, CO, USA. He received his both PhD degrees in Wuhan University (about software engineering), and Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (about dependable networks), respectively. Before he attends Colorado Technical University, he worked in Wentworth Technology Institution, Georgia State University for many years. His research interests include Cloud Computing, Security and Dependability, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Networks, and Optimization Theory.

  Dr./Prof. Xiong published over 100 international journal papers and over 100 international conference papers. Some of his works were published in IEEE JSAC, IEEE or ACM transactions, ACM Sigcomm workshop, IEEE INFOCOM, ICDCS, and IPDPS. He has been a General Chair, Program Chair, Publicity Chair, PC member and OC member of over 100 international conferences, and as a reviewer of about 100 international journals, including IEEE JSAC, IEEE SMC (Park: A/B/C), IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Trans. on Parallel and Distributed Systems. He is serving as an Editor-in-Chief, Associate editor or Editor member for over 10 international journals (including Associate Editor for IEEE Tran. on Systems, Man & Cybernetics: Systems, Associate Editor for Information Science, Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Internet Technology (JIT), and Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Parallel & Cloud Computing (PCC)), and a guest editor for over 10 international journals, including Sensor Journal, WINET and MONET. He has received the Best Paper Award in the 10th IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC-08) and the Best student Paper Award in the 28th North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society Annual Conference (NAFIPS2009).

熊乃学教授于2007/2008年分别获得武汉大学/日本北陆先端科学技术大学院大学 的双博士学位。2008年3月至2012年4月,于美国佐治亚州立大学等计算机系任教。2012年5月至今,在美国 科罗拉多理工大学任正教授(科罗拉多州,施普林施市,是科研型大学)。2008年获得中国计算机学会优秀博士学位论文奖提名,在IEEE JSAC、IEEE Transactions, ACM Transactions, Information Science、IEEE INFOCOM、IEEE LCN、IEEE IPDPS 等杂志期刊以及国际会议上发表论文400多篇,包括期刊约270篇。
    熊乃学教授已在近百个重大国际大会上任大会总主席,程序委员会主席,分会主席,指导或程序委员会委员,例如 Infocomm, IPDPS, CloudComputing, ICA3PP, 3PGCIC, ICISE, ICISE, PICom和UNC等。他是IEEE 可信云计算委员会主席(Chair of Trust Cloud Computing),曾担任美国IEEE计算机学会可扩展计算秘书长(IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing (IEEE TCSC))。也是美国IEEE计算机学会 IEEE-CS Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP),IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS): Intelligent Systems Applications,IEEE Computer Society的高级会员。他也是国际核心期刊 Journal of Internet Technology (JIT, SCIE检索) 和 Journal of parallel and cloud computing (PCC, 第1个云期刊) 的主编, 国际核心期刊 Information Science (影响因子3.6,SCI)和 国际核心期刊 IEEE Transactions on Systems, men, cybernetic: systems 的副主编,中国核心期刊软件学报的编辑。也是其它十多个国际期刊的编辑(见简历),被邀请给近100个期刊做为作客编辑,包括IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions On Mobile Computing等100种期刊杂志。主要研究方向有:云计算、容错安全系统、移动计算与无线网络、高性能计算等。
    熊乃学教授应邀在二十多个学术研讨会上作了主题演讲(keynote speech), 并在美国和许多世界著名大学作了多个应邀学术报告, 其中包括美国Temple大学、中科院、上海交通大学、及清华大学等。熊乃学博士已与美国、加拿大、日本、澳大利亚、欧洲、中国、香港、台湾等地的教授及研究员进行了广泛的合作研究。
